MANGALORE: It has come to light of late that Chartered Accountant AS Vishnu
Bharath, who was one of those who received honorary doctorate form the Mangalore
University recently, had accepted the honour without even submitting his bio-data to the
University.
This aspect came to light when a Bangalore based doctor had sought information
regarding Bharath from the Mangalore University under the Right to Information Act.
Now there is a strong suspicion that the honorary doctorate was conferred on Vishnu
Bharath after exerting much influence.
The first application under RTI submitted to the University, received a reply from the
University giving only details of the award conferred on Bharath at the convocation.
But the doctor submitted yet another RTI application seeking information about the
Vasavi Sharada Hostel and KriyakalpaTechno Cultural Museum with which Bharath was
associated and also the books authored by him. Suspicion had gained ground when the
University in its reply said “We have no such information”
The applicant has alleged that “The Mangalore University Syndicate had closed its eyes
and ears while conferring honorary doctorate to the Chartered Accountant whose name
was recommended by the Tumkur University Vice Chancellor SC Sharma, who is a
senate member and a former principal of the RV College in Bangalore of which Sharma
was a trustee. It is owing to this reason Sharma recommended Vishnu Bharth’s name for
the honorary doctorate.”
However Mangalore University’s Deputy Registrar Prabhaker Neermarga says “We
have no information regarding this. Though we had forwarded the application to Vishnu
Bharath he has not given a proper reply.”
According to Bangalore University’s former Vice Chancellor Timmappa “Usually the
University recommends the names of the eligible persons to the Syndicate and Academic
Council. The Academic Council approves the same and sends it to the Syndicate and
finally the Vice Chancellor approves the same. But it is not known how the Honorary
Doctorate of Vishnu Bharath was approved.”
