Brahmavar Sugar factory quarters – a haven for immoral, unlawful activities

Posted on Jul 14th, 2010 and filed under Special Report.

UDUPI: It has been eight years since the Brahmavar Sugar Factory, once the backbone
of sugarcane growers of Udupi, was closed. Since then, the government residential
quarters of the factory staff, lies abandoned. But this has proved a boon to many unlawful
elements and now these residential quarters have turned into a haven for immoral and
unlawful activities
Almost all the 28 houses here are lying abandoned. Had the district administration taken
steps to rent out these well built quarters, then it would have at least earned lakhs of
rupees as revenue every month. But the apathy of the administration in this regard, has
only helped unlawful elements, complain citizens.
An ATM machine which was stolen from the ATM of State Bank of India at Kinnimulki
had been found near this quarters itself a few days ago. The thieves who had decamped
with the machine had brought it to this place, broke it open and then left with the booty of
around Rs 15 lakhs after abandoning the empty machine.
The thick bushes that have developed around the quarters too have helped people
engaged in unlawful activities, say the locals.
The sugar factory had constructed a total of 48 houses for its workers of which only 18
are presently occupied. It is because several employees had not vacated their homes even
after the closure of the factories. Electricity connections to these occupied houses have
been cut off and it has been years since the walls have been painted and the ill-maintained
houses face fears of collapse any moment.
