Whither democracy ?

Posted on Jul 16th, 2010 and filed under Editorials.

The happenings in the state assembly on July 15, Thursday, had broken all past records
of undemocratic acts. Even as opposition MLAs tore off copies of the legislations tabled,
the ministers concerned tabled the bills and passed the same without any debate. That
the Speakers of both the Houses have been a witness to this incident has raised question
marks over their very commitment to a post that requires an impartial person, but has also
stooped them low in public eyes.
In a democracy, an administration is well accepted only when the government is run after
giving due weightage to the opinion and recommendations of the opposition parties.
But what happened in the House yesterday is exactly the opposite. The government,
completely neglecting the marathon dharna by the opposition since the past four days
demanding a CBI probe into the illegal mining issue, without taking cognizance of them,
tabled the legislations and passed them with the same haste and thereby created a record.
This is a shameless incident. How can a Bill be passed mechanically without debate in
both the Houses ? Does it mean to say that the government had feared to face a debate on
a controversial legislation pertaining to ban on cow slaughter ?
Probably this is the very first time in the history of the state assembly that legislations
and bills were passed amid unprecedented pandemonium over some other issue. This
incident has only been a mirror to the dictatorial fascist mindset of the ruling party.
The Governor, should not for any reason give his stamp of approval for these nine
legislations. He should resend it to the government and direct the government to get it
passed only after a healthy debate in both the Houses, in a peaceful atmosphere.
