Acid rain rumour

Posted on Jul 18th, 2010 and filed under Local News.

MANGALORE: The reports that there had been acid rain in Gurupur in the outskirts of
the city on July 17, Saturday, has given room for much debate.
However, there remains a doubt that some person might have tried to gain undue
publicity by spreading news that there had been brown colored rain which smelt like
diesel and petrol and that several who got drenched in the rain suffered from problems
like headache, red and itchy yes and fever.
However so far there is no evidence to prove that there had been acid rain in and around
Gurupur. Not only that, not even a single resident of this areas, is aware of this, but only
the family of Durga Prasad Shetty of Golidadi which has recently constructed a new
house and has returned from a pilgrim tour. First it were the children who noticed the
brown coloured that dripped from the roof.
The house members who collected this water, then spread the rumour that there was acid
rain.
However, locals say this house has been constructed several crores of rupees and that the
owners had also spent lakhs towards varnishing the wooden pillars of the house. May be
this too might is one of the reason for this suspected ‘acid rain.’
No industries in vicinity: Usually acid rains are experienced in areas where there are
ample industries. But there is not even a single industry in the area. Industrial units are
however located almost 20 kms away from here.
