Chief Minister Yeddyurappa has miserably failed in keeping his house in order. He
and his cabinet colleagues have also been highly irresponsible in raising an unnatural
demand to call back the Governor for the sole ‘offence’ of demanding the dropping of
a few ministers who were looting the state’s precious mine wealth. There was a report
that CM Yeddyurappa had not agreed to such a demand placed forth by the Bellary
Reddys in yesterday morning’s cabinet meeting. However, the picture had changed by
evening as news began to be aired saying the cabinet has decided to build-up pressure
against allowing Governor Bharadwaj to continue in his posting. Finally, this incident has
provided yet another proof to the fact that this government is controlled by the mining
barons and that it was the wish of the Reddy brothers that ultimately proved a guiding
light to Yeddyurappa and his cabinet colleagues.
It’s true that Hamsaraj Bharadwaj is a very active Governor. It cannot be denied that it
was the opinion expressed by the governor in public that the state administration was
heading nowhere in the clutches of the mining barons, that had made the government
stand on its toes. The governor has not kept it a secret that his target are the mine
Reddys who were continuing with their private business interests despite holding office
of profit in the government and were looting the state’s resources worth thousands of
crores of rupees. In reality, he had advised Yeddyurappa not once but several times
saying “Drop the Bellary ministers from cabinet and save the government’s honour.â€
When Yeddyurappa who is all the more interested in saving his chair, had not heeded to
the Governor’s words, what’s wrong if the Governor decides to do whatever he thinks
best on his part ? Already, the investigation into the complaint lodged by him against the
Reddys with the Election Commission, has taken up pace.
No sooner the Governor submitted his report to the Centre on the State’s scenario
mentioning of the anarchy like situation following the collapse of the law and order
machinery, the CM and other BJP leaders realizing that the government was in danger
have dared to override the Governor himself as if to say ‘Offence is the best defence.’
But the BJP men should today recollect the ‘ethics’ of the then NDA government which
had taken the move towards dismissal of the Laloo government even when the situation
in Bihar then was not as serious as it was in Karnataka now. In one way, the Centre could
have very well dismissed the state government a year ago, when the mine Reddys who
revolted against Yeddyurappa created a political storm in the state, staking all honour
of the government. There had then arisen a situation when even the public were waiting
for the government’s fall. But Yeddyurappa had somehow survived then. But, had he
resigned to tide over the present crisis, then he would have not only saved himself from
the pressure applied on him by the opposition and the Reddys, but it would have also
given him anther chance to seek people’s mandate.
Yeddyurappa’s by letting go a golden opportunity of being projected as a valiant leader,
has created a permanent record by joining pages of history as a “CM who is ready to do
anything for the sake of power.’
Did Yeddyurappa need all this? Power is not permanent, but history will only remember
what a person has done and contributed during his tenure.
After all it cannot be forgotten that the State government is being run in the name of the
Governor and at his pleasure.
But the moment the Governor realizes that the government functioning under him,
instead of acting in accordance to constitutional guidelines, was engaged in profit making
business, he is committed to withdraw the faith he has reposed on the head of the elected
government.
