Heavy rain causes artificial floods ; sea erosion intensifies

MANGALORE : The heavy rains that has been lashing Dakshina Kannada and Udupi
districts since the past couple of days, has resulted in water logging at several places
while also intensifying the problem of sea erosion. At least four houses have collapsed in
various parts of the district.
Artificial flood like situation has arisen in several places including Jeppinamogaru,
Amblamogaru, Kallaup,Kodialbail, Kottara Chowki and other places. Vehicular traffic
was also obstructed on the Bajal road and the Kulai-Bailare road that were water logged.
The house of one Baby Shetty at Ekkarugude near Bajpe collapsed on July 19, Monday.
However no one was hurt as the inmates of the house were away when the incident took
place. Even in Puttur, a house belonging to Raju Ajalaya at Mukwe collapsed due to
heavy rains. The Ashraya house was sanctioned to Raju fifteen years ago, No one was
injured even in this case.
Meanwhile, sea erosion at Koorikatta, Kulai, Hosabettu, Mukka, Sasihitlu and other
places has intensified. The problem is acute in Sasihitlu and the road nearby is facing
fears of being washed away. The district administration has warned fishermen against
venturing into sea in the view of the warning of heavy rains with strong winds during the
next three to four days.
In Bada Ermal a portion of the house of Kalyani Karkera on the fisheries road, has been
engulfed by the sea. The remaining portion of her house has developed cracks and
coconut trees were uprooted.
In Bada village, the compound wall of one RK Kanchan too has collapsed due to the
mighty tidal waves, while four coconut trees belonging to Vishwanath Kotian were
uprooted.
Meanwhile in Kaup Uliyaragoli, the house of Sridhar Acharya has partially collapsed,
while the house of Shanker of Shivalli village was damaged after a cconut tree fell over
it.
