MANJESHWAR: If everything had gone according to plan, then this young man was
supposed to tie the nuptial knot on July 22, Thursday. But destiny had something else
in store for him. The man, a resident of Udyavar Irshad Road who had been to distribute
his wedding invitation to relatives and friends in a joyous mood, lost both his legs after
coming under a train. The young man who ought to be a support to his parents in their
old age, is now sadly dependent on them. This is the tragic tale of Ahmed Basheer (30), a
resident of Udyavar Irshad Road.
Second son of Usman Hussain, Ahmed is today leading a pathetic life after losing both
his legs. He was supposed to marry a young lady from Poyyattabail in Manjeshwar.
On July 1 he had been to distribute wedding invitation to some colleagues at
Tiruvananthapuram and was on his return journey. As the train reached Manjeshwar, he
came near the doors and slipped and fell on to the tracks and the train passed over his
legs severing them from the rest of his body. If one leg was completely severed, another
was in a suspended position. Basheer was in an unconscious state and was immediately
admitted to Tejaswini Hospital in Mangalore, where doctors said it was impossible to join
his legs.
Basher hailing from an economically poor family, had worked in National Plywood
Company for about ten years and later was a hotel employee in Tiruvananthapuram,
Aluva and Kottayam and was the sole bread winner of his family. Today his aged parents
are in a state of shock unable to see their son’s condition. The family is also in dire
need of financial aid. Generous donors can remit their donations to Usman Hussain,
