Govt moves to curb GP powers resented

UDUPI : Deviprasad Shetty, President of the Udupi Taluk Gram Panchayat Federation
has warned of severe agitation if the government made any attempt to curtail the powers
of the gram panchayats.
Alleging that the government was conspiring in this regard, he urged the governor not
to approve the panchayat amendment bill that has been passed in the assembly, for any
reason.
There is also a need for an apolitical fight whenever any government tried to come in way
of the freedom of the local administrative bodies, he said and recollected how the strong
movement by panchayat representatives foiled the bid by erstwhile CMs Dharam Singh
and Kumaraswamy to get the panchayatraj amendment bill passed.
Alleging that the government has already come in the way of decentralization of power
by curtailing the powers of the panchayat presidents and members by appointing
development officer, he said a movement would be launched against this in the coming
days.
