ANKOLA : At a time when agriculture is a far less attractive profession for the present
day youngsters who are heading towards the towns in search of greener pastures,
forgetting the greenery back in their villages, the Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner
made a worthwhile and novel effort to create an awareness among the rural youngsters to
come back to their roots-farming.
Many were surprised to see the Deputy Commissioner in a perfect farmer’s attire
and all ready for farming at Bhasagoda in Ankola recently. The DC Amaranarayana
accompanied by several farmers and cooperative leaders ploughed the fields and set
the trend as his wife Parimala who stood nearby watched her husband’s work with
admiration.
Several who took part in the function took an oath that they will not shun farming.
Outstanding farmers were honoured on the occasion. The DC looked a typical farmer
and worked in the fields for as long as three hours.
Noted cooperative leader KV Naika, advocate Nagaraj Naika and others accompanied the
DC.
Speaking on the occasion the Deputy Commissioner called upon the younger generation
to divert attention toward agriculture. Considering the decreasing land under cultivation,
the DC feared the situation if remained the same would lead to an acute food shortage in
the nation. Such programmes, he felt would go a long way in creating awareness among
the youngsters.
