Harassment by jail mates led to under trial’s suicide ?

Posted on Jul 29th, 2010 and filed under Crime/Mishaps.

UDUPI : It is being said that the continuous harassment and assault by fellow jail mates might have forced under trial Krishna Marakala to end his life. Krishna Marakala who had been arrested on charges of raping and murdering a young woman of Kadoor village some time back, had committed suicide by hanging himself with his lungi in the bathroom of the Udupi District Jail at Kajaraguttu on July 28 Wednesday.

What has now been gathered is that the jail authorities had not made any attempt to shift him elsewhere despite complaints of harassment. It is also believed that Marakala had attempted suicide a month ago too unable to bear the harassment. Just recently he had even escaped from the jail while he was taken outside the jail compound reportedly to do some work in the jail superintendent’s house. He however was subsequently trapped near the bus stand.

It has become common for the older under trials in the prison to commit atrocities on new comers in the absence of strict vigil on the part of jail authorities.
