KASARGOD: Talapady, a border area of Karnataka and Kerala, is one of the places that has been badly affected by the indiscriminate sand smuggling activities.
Devipura a place near Talapady is the worst hit, with the condition of its roads, saying it all. The frequent plying of sand lorries have proved a veritable nuisance to the people of this area.
Just a couple of days ago, a sand smugging lorry, in its haste to proceed, knocked down an electricity pole forcing the residents of the area to spend two days in darkness.
Devipura is a place that links Talapady and it is through this place that sand smuggling lorries proceed towards Kerala after loading sand mined illegally from several places in Dakshina Kannada including Adyar, Harekala, Sajipa, Anekallu and other places. Political patronage is believed to be the main reason for the indiscriminate sand smuggling. Over 100 lorries move through this route right from early morning till midnight using fake passes.
