There seems to be more than what meets the eye in the surprising turn which the case of police atrocities on a suspected witness in the case of the murder of a labourer in the farm of Coastal Development Authority Chief Nagaraj Shetty that took place two years ago.
Though rumours are doing the rounds regarding Shetty’s role in the murder, are the reports that the police have tortured a witness to provide evidence that Shetty himself is responsible for the murder, any indication of the tug of war between two rival camps of the ruling party which is trying to reign in power in the district?
Nagaraj Shetty has several rivals in his own party. One reason for this is his style of functioning wherein he gives no room for anyone to have a say. Despite a defeat in the assembly elections, he has been successful in becoming the Chairman of a mere letter head authority called Coastal Development Authority and even has an official car, an office and staff in Mangalore. Though he has to be satisfied with his posting, his behind the scene efforts to grab a position in the cabinet are no secret. If attempts are underway to bring down sitting minister Palemar considered a political opponent of Shetty, the forces behind this attempt are also known to everyone.
It is also a truth that a major battle is underway between Nagaraj Shetty and his opponent camp which has presently gained an upper hand as if to prove that everything is fair in love and war.
Is it that Shetty’s rival camp which has concluded that he is a person who would prove politically dangerous to them always, tried to bog him down using the Bantwal cops?
Usually, a home minister does not intervene in such matters. He usually allows the matter to take its own course, but has the authority to ensure that the investigation was progressing on the right track, if it was found going astray. This is also a duty of a home minister.
But why did Home Minister Acharya arrive in the scene even before the news of police atrocity appeared in the media and the SP could take action against the corrupt officials ? Why has the Home Minister evinced so much interest in this case ? In how many cases of police atrocities, has he spoken to the affected persons? This is for the first time he has intervened in a case of police atrocity which however has become quite common in the district.
Has Acharya made an entry in the scene to protect the interests of one of the two camps of the ruling party in the district ?
Though several such questions may be lurking in public minds, probably they may not get an answer to the same. One thing that is crystal clear is that the police personnel in the district are puppets at the hands of politicians.
The police do not hesitate to even torture innocents as per the dictates of the ministers and ruling party politicians. The atrocities committed by Bantwal Police is not the only one example, We have several such instances. The recent case of Bantwal however is the latest example to the misuse of power by the ruling party politicians.
