Why have our leaders neglected flood hit areas ?

Posted on Aug 1st, 2010 and filed under Editorials.

During every monsoon, it is common to see the politicians and VIPs making a bee line
to the sea erosion affected areas. But none of these so called leaders visited the places
affected by the recent floods that hit various parts of the district. Not even the ministers
visited the affected areas. What’s the secret behind this? Had they visited, then they could
have even enjoyed free publicity.
A visit to the flood affected areas is not as easy as visiting a sea erosion affected place.
In fact in case of sea-erosion, the affected place can be visited even when it does not rain.
But in the event of visiting a flood hit area, then the leaders will have to visit when it
rains heavily and should also be prepared to get drenched in the rain. But in case they
decide to visit later on, the floods would have receded by then. They also have to visit
flood hit areas with life saving jackets. It cannot be a pleasure trip !
What better example do we need other than this to reveal the true colour of our
ministers and so called leaders? The politicians who are ever ready to visit any ‘event’
that does not involve much risk but will also give them much publicity, would dare not
visit the flood hit areas in some mini boat.
There are several places in the coastal district which get inundated in case it rains
incessantly for a minimum of six hours. This is very common and the news appear
along with photographs in the media. But it does not mean that neither the district
administration nor the elected representatives are unaware of it.
What steps has the government taken to reduce such incidences of flood? The authorities
who could chalk out a project worth several crores of rupees to find a permanent solution
to sea erosion, can very well find some solution to prevent the low lying areas from
getting inundated.
What I feel is that the people who are affected by such floods are not important for the
leaders as most of them belong to lower middle class and many a times poorer sections.
They also do not get much focus nor do they raise their voice. It should now be the
priority of the government to provide compensation to the affected people and take
steps to see that such problems do not recur. There is a need for the government to act in
coordination with the local administration and elected representatives in this regard.
