PADUBIDRI: The Action Committee of people likely to be affected by the NH 17
widening at Padubidri has urged the National Highway Authority of India to make its
decision clear on the issue of constructing a bye-pass at Padubidri.
Speaking to reporters on August 4, Wednesday, Y Sukumar, President of the Committee
has demanded that the road in Padubidri town should not be widened and a bye-pass road
should be constructed as an alternative. He also warned that the Committee would resort
to a severe protest if the authorities failed to heed to its demands.
He pointed out that as many as 15 hotels, auditoriums, three hospitals, banks, houses and
over 200 shops would be displaced if the road was widened and that this would render as
many as 2600 people jobless.
In case the highway was widened by a minimum 60 meters, then all the above mentioned
buildings will have to be razed to the ground, he said adding constructing a bye-pass was
the solution to the problem.
He also demanded that the NHAI made its stand clear on this issue at the earliest.
