‘Govt moves to release prisoners in exchange for funds’; Justice Saldanha writes to Governor

Posted on Aug 7th, 2010 and filed under Capital News.

BANGALORE : Transparency International (Karnataka Chapter) President and former

High Court judge Justice MF Saldanha who has objected to the state government’s

moves to release 594 prisoners lodged in various jails, even before they completed their

sentences, has written a letter to State Governor seeking a probe into the case. Justice

Saldanha in his letter has also suspected some foul play behind this.

Stating that the decision to release the prisoners had certain malafied intentions, Justice

Saldanha alleged that “ The Home Department had prepared the list of prisoners to be

released after collecting funds ranging from Rs 5 lakh to Rs one crore depending on the

offence committed by the prisoners.” “ The government has not recommend the names of

the poor prisoners who could not arrange for funds,” Justice Saldanha pointed out.

“ The Home Department has secured a minimum of Rs 200 crores in this dealing and this

is a major scam,” Justice Saldanha said in his letter.

The list of prisoners whose release has been recommended by the government is waiting

for the Governor’s approval. It is learnt even the Governor who is not happy with this

wants the government to reveal the purpose behind the moves to release such a large

number of prisoners, and also if there were some hidden political interests behind this.
