Release of prisoners: Governor returns file to state govt

BANGALORE: State Governor Hamsaraj Bharadwaj has returned the file forwarded to

him by the state government with a proposal to release as many as 593 prisons who are

undergoing life imprisonment.

In his letter to the Chief Minister, the Governor has said “I cannot agree to the

recommendation to release the prisoners well before their sentence period ended. It

would be absurd to do so.”

” The government has not yet revealed the secret behind its decision to release 593

prisoners who have been sentenced to life term. This means the government has not cited

reasons that can be justified for such release,” the Governor said in the letter.

“Though the government in its proposal has said that there was more meaning in

releasing them than their remaining behind bars, the government has not made it clear if

the society wished that they be released.”

“As even an allegation of irregularity is being heard behind this proposal, my agreeing to

it may create legal problems. Therefore I have sent back this file,” the Governor said.
