MANGALORE : The failure of the National Highway Authority of India to take steps to
maintain the National Highways within the city limits, came up for heated debate at the
Mangalore City Corporation meeting held on August 30 , Monday.
MCC Commissioner Vijayaprakash reacting to the complaints, said an official meeting
would be convened in this regard within a week.
Raising the matter at the meeting, Corporator James D’Souza said the stretch of the
highway from Baikampady to Tokkottu was in a very bad state making it difficult for
both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. He also resented the absence of the NHAI officials
at the corporation meetings and wanted to know from the mayor if they were invited for
the meeting. Even Corporator Tilakraj pointed out the pitiable condition of the road from
Nantoor to Jeppinamogaru which too was filled with innumerous potholes.
Opposition member Shashidhar Hegde said even the roads in the city were in a
deplorable state, pointing fingers towards the inaction of the MCC. This infuriated the
ruling corporators leading to a heated exchange of words.
Finally, Commissioner Vijayaprakash said the NHAI officials would be asked to be
present in the meeting and added even the mayor has written a letter to the authority in
this regard. He also assured to hold talks with the NHAI officials within a week.
He further informed that the Chief Minister has announced an additional grant of Rs 100
crore to the Mangalore City Corporation and added Rs 76 crores of the earlier allocated
Rs 100 crore has been released.
