MANGALORE : The Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Ltd which has made
life difficult for people of Kuttettur and vicinity, by polluting waters of wells and lakes
due to oil seepage, has tried to keep scribes in its stride, by gifting them water purifiers,
instead of providing the same to people of Kuttettur who are forced to drink contaminated
water. The MRPL had convened a press meet at the factory premises on September 4,
Saturday, just to say that everything was fine. MRPL Chairman RS Sharma, Managing
Director UK Basu and DGM Lekshmi Kumaran were present at the meet.
If only a handful of pressmen usually attend press meets convened by some social
organization or a retired judge, almost all scribes and cameramen from various print and
visual media had made it a point to be present to their capacity for the press meet. The
MRPL had also made vehicle arrangements to pick up and drop the scribes. They were
not only gifted water purifiers but also served a sumptuous lunch. It is said that MRPL
might have spent as much as Rs 10 lakhs for the event.
It is an irony that MRPL which has been wailing that it had to incur crores of rupees
of losses due to the failure of farmer Gregory Patrao to let his land , however has not
hesitated to spend lakhs towards a press meet.
