Lokayukta sleuths trap weight inspector

UDUPI : The Lokayukta police, on September 4, Saturday trapped an officer and a clerk

of the Department of Weights and Measures of Udupi , and three agents while accepting

a bribe of Rs. 1,600 from a grocer.

Raghavendra K. Koppar, inspector in the department, V. Krishna, a ‘D’ group worker

and agents Akbar, Ibrahim and Gopal Poojary, have been apprehended on the basis

of a complaint lodged by he grocer Ahmed Kabeer of Muloor near Kaup. Ahmed had

complained to the Lokayukta after the officer and the clerk demanded a bribe of

Rs 1600 though the government rate to affix the seal to the two electronic weighing

machines produced by Ahmed was Rs 600. They had also sent Ahmed back saying they

cannot affix the seal unless they were paid the demanded money.Accordingly, the raid

took place when Ahmed handed over the amount to the officer, as per the instructions of

the Lokayukta.

Investigations have revealed that over 30 private agents were engaged in the task of

fleecing traders who come to the office to get seals affixed to their weighing machines.
