MANGALORE : Traffic problem in the growing city of Mangalore, is at its worst as of
now. But, certainly there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel with the Mangalore
City Corporation, Mangalore Police Commissionerate and the District Administration
planning to have a Master plan to address to the traffic problems of the city.
Except for a couple of traffic signals in Mangalore, the rest have been rendered useless,
with the traffic police themselves manning the tariff signal lights.
Compared to other growing cities, Mangalore has minimum traffic police personnel.
One of the main proposals under the scheme is to increase the number of traffic police
personnel. Apart from this, there is also a proposal to have CCTV cameras at strategic
locations in order to facilitate traffic control through a separate control room. Presently
such a system is effectively operative in Hubli, Bangalore and Mysore.
According to Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner KN Vijayaprakash, under
the second instalment of Rs 100 crore announced by the Chief Minister, a sum of Rs
5 crore has been allocated for improvement in traffic. On the new project he said only
preliminary talks have been held and it would be difficult to explain or outline the
project. But one thing that is sure is that the proposald plan would prove to be of great
benefit to the motorists and the pedestrians alike and people can certainly heave a sigh of
relief from the traffic problems.
Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, while admitting that traffic
control has been a major challenge before the police department at present, added talks
are being held to find a solution to the problem. He also said the proposal to have CCTV
cameras at important traffic junctions would not only ease traffic congestion, but would
also help in preventing accidents.
With the help of CCTV cameras, the department can deviate traffic from an already
congested road at any time., he added.
Moreover the CCTV cameras would also reduce the burden on the traffic police whose
services can be utilized at other places., he added.
But, it is still not known as to when this comprehensive scheme for traffic management
would be implemented.
