UDUPI: The Udupi town police have on Monday arrested a gang of five inter-state thieves who were experts in committing thefts and robberies in true cinematic style by diverting the attention of the public.
The arrested have been identified as Janaki Raman (30, Mambali Vasan (25), Aditya (44), Umapathi (22) and Shakti Madan, all residents of Ramjiagar in Tiruchinapalli of Tamil Nadu. The arrests were made near the Nittoor Hanumanthanagar School on the National Highway -17 when the foursome was all set to leave for their hometown, after a major theft.
The gang which has stolen a laptop of a person near the Udupi bus stand recently, had even stolen a cash of Rs 25000 kept inside a parked car near the bus stand, after breaking open the window panes.
The gang which included as many as 10 persons used to mainly select parking slots as its area of operation. Its modus operandi was to first deliberately drop a few currency notes and then divert the attention of the person in the car and later on escape with the valuables. If two to four gang members executed the plot, a few others would be watching the act by keeping a distance so that they could protect their fellowmen in case of any danger of being trapped.
