Riyana case likely to be handed over to Crime Branch

Posted on Oct 4th, 2009 and filed under Crime/Mishaps.

KASARGOD: With no progress registered in the case of missing of a minor girl Riyana from Chengala Taivalappu, the possibilities of the Crime Branch taking over investigation into this case, has increased.
The deadline set by the State High Court to the police to trace Riyana and produce her before the court would expire on Monday. Though the probe is currently underway under the leadership of the DCRB DySP Prakash, there has been no much progress as the whereabouts of the girl are not yet known.
Even the information that she might have been caught in a sex racket operating from Hampankata in Mangalore, could not do much reportedly owing to the presence of some influential forces behind the racket. Meanwhile, the indefinite strike launched by Riyana’s mother Fauziya near the new bus stand in Kasargod, has entered the tenth day. Already various political parties, cultural and social organizations have pledged their support for this agitation.
It may be recalled here that 14 year old Riyana who had left for school on May 18 this year did not return home with all the effort to trace her going vain. Her mother had even filed a habeas corpus petition in the High Court seeking to find her daughter and the time limit set by the court to the police has so far been extended thrice.
In toto it may not be wrong to say that the Riyana missing case has posed a major challenge to the department in the district.
