
MANGALORE : Members of the Coordination Committee of the Autorickshaw Drivers’ Associations of DK District staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in the city on Tuesday in support of several of their demands including pension and PF facility.
Addressing the agitators, Ali Hassan, President of the Committee complained that the governments have failed to provide any amenity to the over 20,000 autorickshaw drivers who were contributing crores to the state exchequer in the form of taxes. He also pointed out that the autorickshaws drivers of the neighbouring Kerala and Tamil Nadu have succeeding in securing pension, PFI, BPL ration card and also scholarships for their children, through organized efforts.
He warned of severe agitation if steps were not taken to fulfill the demands of the autorickshaw drivers.
A memorandum enlisting various demands including low interest housing loans, scholarships to children of autorickshaw drivers, measures to increase the compensation provided in case of accidents to Rs one lakh, etc, to the chief minister through the Deputy Commissioner.
Hundreds of autorickshaws drivers took part in the agitation.
