Riyana case : Cops get10 more days to trace missing minor girl

Posted on Oct 10th, 2009 and filed under General.

KASARGOD : The Kerala High Court has grant ten days time to the police to trace Riyana of Chengala Taivalappu who has been reported missing.
The time limit earlier set by the court to the police to produce the missing girl, expired on Wednesday and on Thursday, the public prosecutor sought additional time limit to trace the girl. Meanwhile, the police even forwarded a detailed report on the investigation done so far.
The court has directed that the girl be traced by October 18 failing which the DGP has to personally appear before the court and give an explanation. Meanwhile, the DCRB DySP who is heading the investigation team, has been transferred to the Kasargod unit of the crime branch., Though the reason being attributed for the same is the charges against the officer in connection with an attack on a journalist, there is a general feeling that there is more than what meets the eye.
As of now DySP Abdul Gafur has been appointed the head of the investigation team. However, the transfer of Prakash at a time when the investigation has achieved a breakthrough has given room for several doubts. It is also being said that some influential forces had played a role behind Prakash’s transfer as his report has mentioned of ‘some persons’ who are said to be involved in the case.
On the other hand, the reappointment of Abdul Gafur as the head of the investigation team, when he while handling the case earlier had under criticism for reportedly threatening Riyana’s mother, has come as a surprise.
It may be mentioned here that once earlier too Riyana went missing mysteriously three years ago, but was later traced near her house a few days later. Though a complaint was lodged then, the police had hesitated to take up the invesigation.
Now a demand for a CBI probe into this case is gaining momentum.
