The ISRO was successful in undertaking a research to find if there was water in the moon situated thousands of miles away from us. Then why was it not possible for ISRO to predict that there would be a deluge at its very feet ? In fact discarding wastes in rivers, luxurious living, airconditioned rooms, AC cars, destruction of agricultural lands by projects like SEZ and the tears shed by farmers, have all contributed to this deluge. The government which spends crores of rupees for construction of factories and power plants finds no money to spend for those who have been rendered destitutes in the deluge. It also lacks enough amenities and infrastructure to provide timely relief to the affected people. There is also no arrangement to put up emergency tents for the stay of the people. Instead of constructing dams spending thousands of crores of rupees, the government should take steps to desilt the rivers. The main reason for the deluge is the opening of the flood gates of the dams, whenever rivers begin to overflow, without any warning.
The repeated pleas of the environmentalists to take up eco- friendly projects have also fallen on deaf ears. Instead the greens are criticized as anti-government.
The government should at least now realize that it is man himself who is to be blamed for such a deluge. Let us follow nature’s rule. A deluge is no God’s curse. It is hoped steps would be taken to save Mother Nature and also to reduce global warming in order to make this earth a better place to live.
